Jesus Anthem II

Jesus Anthem II
I Choose Jesus!

In my previous post, I shared a song entitled I Choose You by Sara Bareilles.  It appears to be a love song.   However,  I wanted to share my thoughts on how this song speaks to me in a religious context.  I hear it as “I Choose You Jesus!”

In this post, I will lay out each verse of the song.  After each verse I will insert a bullet with my thoughts on that verse.  So here it goes:

I Choose You by Sara Bareilles

Let the bough break, let it come down crashing, Let the sun fade out to a dark sky; I can’t say I’d even notice it was absent ’cause I could live by the light in your eyes.

  • My first thought on this is – the light of Christ shines in the darkness.  When you have Christ in your heart, darkness, however you may be experiencing it, will not win.  It is Christ that brings us peace, it is Christ that carries us through the difficult times.
  • My second thought is – the eyes are the windows to the soul. When people look into your eyes, what do they see?  What are you projecting?  Are you projecting the light of Christ?

I’ll unfold before you, would have strung together, the very first words of a lifelong love letter.

  • Unfolding – becoming your True Self and maintaining a strong, deep, personal and faithful relationship with Christ.

Chorus

Tell the world that we finally got it all right, I choose you.  I will become yours and you will become mine, I choose you.

  • Let the world know you are a follower of Christ.  As Scripture suggests, don’t hide your lamp under a bushel basket.   Let people closest to you know what a personal relationship with Christ means to you.  Christ humbled himself to share in our humanity so that we might share in His divinity.

There was a time when I would have believed them if they told me that you could not come true.  Just love’s illusion.  But then you found me and everything changed and I believe in something again.

  • There’s a time when we are distracted by the “way of the world.” We may even question the existence of God but He never gives up on us.  As a matter of fact, He is with us always.  There’s actually a Poem called The Hound of Heaven that speaks to this.  He is constantly working in us and eventually we GET IT! Everything changes – we believe, we surrender, we find PEACE!

My whole heart, will be yours forever, this is a beautiful start to a lifelong love letter.

  • A transformed heart, dependent on Christ and seeking to please Him in all things.

We are not perfect we’ll learn from our mistakes and as long as it takes I will prove my love to you.  I’m not scared of the elements I am underprepared but I am willing and even better, I get to be the other half of you.

  • Repentant of our failings, we are constantly striving to get it right. Courageous, we dare to be counter-cultural, knowing that God is with us and even better – the more we aim to please Him our reward will be great in heaven AND on earth as we share in His divinity.

I’ve added the link to the song above just in case you’d like to listen one more time after reading this interpretation.

I hope you enjoyed it! God bless you!

Jesus Anthem

my Jesus anthem
I choose Jesus!

My Jesus Anthem!  As I continue on my spiritual journey, I notice that most of my daily thoughts are focused on God.  If I’m home, I pray often, read spiritually enlightening books, prepare for my Friday morning prayer group and other studies.  When out and about, I enjoy listening to music in the car.  Not only do I enjoy the beat of the music but  I focus more on the words of a song and I try to relate it all back to God.

My desire to find God in all things, especially music, stems from my teaching CCD.   I wanted to find a way for my students to shift their focus from things of “the world” to God.  The first challenge I posed was with music.  They were to find popular songs and see if they could be related to God.  I wanted to try to get them to see God and think of God throughout their day, not just on Sunday.

I get so excited when I hear a popular song on the radio that I can turn into a “religious” song.  Like the One Call Away by Charlie Puth I blogged about before.  Today, I want to share I Choose You by Sara Bareilles.  It’s a beautiful song.  It’s my song to Jesus.  My Jesus Anthem!  Listen here.

I’ll share my thoughts about it later.  God never ceases to amaze me! I hope you enjoy it.  God bless you.
